What moment or experience at Iowa State most shaped your career path?

Getting into the program and doing my first internship really solidified my desire to become a microbiologist.

How did your involvement in clubs, internships or research opportunities at Iowa State prepare you for your current role?

I worked at Veterinary Microbiology and Preventative Medicine as a student. This hands-on research opportunity helped give me the skills needed for a successful career. Other volunteer opportunities and involvement really solidified my space within the Iowa State campus and made me feel like Iowa State was my home.

What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your education or career, and how did you overcome it?

Being a double major was incredibly difficult, managing the curriculums and courseload. I had wonderful advisors who helped me organize everything and keep me on track. Micro was always what brought me joy during the hectic times. Also, taking advantage of campus organizations like learning communities and tutoring.

Fill in the blank and provide a brief explanation: “I wouldn’t be where I am today without ______.”

All of the staff at Iowa State ensuring that students have the keys to success they need to flourish.

Fill in the blank: “The best piece of advice I received in college was _________, and here’s why it stuck with me: _________.”

Keep an open mind. It stuck with me because I genuinely may not be a microbiology graduate had I not tried something new and tried an internship in the field.
